The Fishing Committee has a strong rapport with our Michigan Department of Natural Resources biologists, and we work together to better understand the fish populations of Sage Lake. One of the ways we can provide more data for the fisheries biologists is to register your catches on Sage Lake. We have an easy-to-use survey that is completely anonymous and provides critical catch information that helps us with management decisions. To participate in our Sage Lake Fishing Survey, click here. Sage Lake is also routinely surveyed by MDNR biologists. Most recently, the lake received an “ice-out” northern pike survey in the spring of 2022. Following our walleye stocking efforts, we’re hoping for a walleye survey in the spring of 2023 or 2024. From the ice-out survey: A total of 14 Walleye averaging 22.7 inches were collected with 100% of the catch larger than the 15 inches MSL for inland lakes. Age and growth analysis indicated Walleye were growing above the statewide average with a mean growth index of +2.8 inches. Multiple year classes (ages 4-17) were found but only one year (age-17) aligned with stocked years. These data indicate Walleye may be naturally reproducing in Sage Lake, despite the expectations for lake conditions not being suitable enough to support a Walleye population.
