Lake Evaluation Summary

From PLM's 2022 Lake Evaluation

Sage Lake was managed throughout the summer of 2022 utilizing a combination of systemic and contact herbicides for the control of Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM), curly leaf pondweed (CLP), starry stonewort (SSW) and various native species/algae. The amount of EWM being managed yearly has gone down drastically while utilizing systemic herbicides. There will be fluctuations in the EWM populations throughout the years, but it is important to keep in mind the goals of the program and aquatic plant management. Rotating active ingredients for the control of plants is key to limiting plant resistances.

SSW will continue to be managed aggressively using Seclear G. Treatments done in 2022 did an excellent job in limiting the spread of SSW and keeping the biomass down.

Wild Celery is the biggest native issue on Sage Lake. PLM treated 80 acres throughout the season and were able to hold season-long control up until mid-August. PLM will look into further pursuing a permit amendment to treat offshore in some areas for wild celery suppression.

Sage Lake’s recommended management program:
  • Survey program including annual AVAS survey.
  • Water quality evaluation (optional).
  • Aggressive exotic plant control when/where found.
  • Algae treatments around shoreline using Chelated copper.
  • Nuisance Native Plant Control where needed.
